Recorded live on Oct 8, 2018 on my Twitch channel - twitch.tv/portscenter
Successful run starts at 15:21 - I cut the first of my aborted runs but apparently neglected to cut the second. Whoops!
This speedrun will be the subject of an upcoming episode of PortsCenter! Subscribe to FilmJoy to catch it when it drops: http://youtube.com/filmjoy
I played using the stock "classic" English Talkie version of Simon the Sorcerer available from GOG.com, which runs the PC MS-DOS files through ScummVM 2.0.0 on a Windows 10 machine. Other than display settings (I run the game in a window at 3x magnification so I can see the timer and monitor the stream) none of the other ScummVM settings were changed from their defaults.
I encountered a recurring glitch as a result of skipping dialog. ScummVM apparently doesn't like that, so some sprites ghost and some scenes freeze entirely for up to a minute. I think I know why that happened, and may be able to bypass in future.
I also fluffed a couple of points - acquiring the Extinguisher and collecting the spell book in Sordid's tower. If I can avoid fluffing that in a future run, avoid glitches, and ace the Wizard's Duel in three moves, I reckon a sub-65min run is possible. Hell, with more efficient mouse movement we might even be able to get down to the 1-hour mark.
The attempt counter is wrong, a result of my testing the hotkeys in LiveSplit. The attempt shown here was, I think, my third of the stream. The split markers are also off because I made them a little too vague and forgot to mark 'em. Future runs will have more specific splits.
This was the current world record, being the previous and, to date, only other record (which was recorded just six days prior to mine!) by 10 minutes and 9 seconds. I have since beaten it when a 1hr, 1min, 17sec run. Not too shabby, eh?
There is another run on YouTube that comes in at 20min 19sec that runs the game at approximately 4x speed. Not exactly in the spirit of speedruns, but watching that run did help me during the research stages to help me streamline my path and map a route that I was confident would be shorter than 80 minutes.
Thanks for watching!
